Homemade Laundry Soap

For years my mother in-law and sister in-law were trying to get me to make their laundry soap. I was a "Gain Snob" and I loved my liquid detergent. Well after 4 years I finally made the jump and made some for myself. I don't know why it took me so long to try! It smells so good, extremely easy to make, economical to make and lasts for months! This recipe lasts me about 7 months and I do about 1 load a day.

I use 2 TBSP per load on a normal-large load and dump it in where I put my clothes. It is HE Safe which is a plus! When making it I dump every box into a 5 gallon bucket, grate up the soap bars with a cheese grater just for making laundry soap (I think I found mine at Walmart for $2). I then shake all the ingredients in except the scent booster and then mix it up. Once mixed in I have a glass jar that I fill up and put about 1/3 scent booster in so that I can change the scent I am using. That way I can put my 5 gallon bucket up on my shelf and save some room.

Did I mention how good it smells? I love to leave the lid off my jar just so I can smell it when I walk past my laundry room. If you have been on the fence about making homemade laundry soap give it a try, you won't regret it. It has been a huge money saver for my family and only costs $30! I broke the recipe down by how much each item costs to show you how cost effective it is.

A few tips I've started doing to save a little money in the long run is buy something every time I go shopping so that I always have enough on hand to make an extra batch. I store everything I need to make this soap in a tote so that next time I make a new batch I don't have to go looking for everything. 2 TBSP is the same size as a coffee scoop so I keep one in my jar at all times.
